day. not much in the way of rain or thunderstorm activity. not expecting much today and we are going to be hot this afternoon with highs near 100 so get ready for a hot one. in fact, temperatures already on the warm side. radar not showing any activities. reagan national, 81 degrees. dulles, 72. that's not terrible. 76 at bwi marshall. hooking at bright sunshine, high temperatures in the hot department with highs expected to top out near 100 degrees by 4:00 p.m. we should be dry this afternoon with just a few clouds moving through. mother details on the hot forecast in just a minute. back to you guys at the desk. >> stoi. a bridge in detroit has reopened after police closed it last night because of a bomb threat that. bridge links detroit to ontario, canada. detroit police say someone called with a bomb threat but they did not find any explosives. federal authorities are working with local police to try to figure out what caused a

deadly plane crash in montgomery county. the small plane went down just before 7:30 last night in laytonsville, maryland right near davis airport. one person was killed in the crash. another one was seriously hurt. there will be another round of talks today on whether to hold a special session on expanding gambling in maryland. >> governor martin o'malley is still trying to rally support. as tom first gerald reports -- fitzgerald reports, it is far from a sure bet. >> reporter: ike leggett and rushern baker arrived ready to talk. >> this is millions of dollars for the state of maryland fork prince george's county and baltimore city. >> reporter: baker wants governor o'malley to call a special session of the legislature in order to expand the number of gaming sites in

maryland from five for six and put that new casino at the national harbor in prince george's. >> i feel like progress is being made. >> reporter: but the governor won't call a special session at least until he has agreement from house leaders like speaker michael bush who has said he doesn't think expanded gambling would pass right now. the governor is prying to ease political rivalry among competing counties by creating a new gambling commission which would decide on things like gaming tax rates. >> perhaps now, there is the opportunity for the house leadership to coalesce around their leader and, if so, we could get this done, i think, and in pretty short order. >> reporter: while we can't tell you if or what governor o'malley would call a special session on gambling, what we can tell you is that not everybody is on board with this idea especially the people who have invested millions of dollars in opening up new casinos in maryland. maryland live casino opened

this year in arundel mills at a cost of nearly half a billion dollars by its owners. expanding gambling even before all five allotted casino sites in maryland have opened, the openers say. too much dpetion too close to their doors. still, supporters of expanding gambling in maryland say they are optimistic they've got two of the three pieces they need to make a deal. >> thanks to the governor's leadership and the fact that we've got the senate already on board, i think there is a good chance. i think we're there. >> reporter: but they can't get there without the maryland house so the governor and senate president mike miller will meet tuesday with house speaker bush to continue negotiations. in annapolis, tom fitzgerald, fox 5 news. lawmakers lawmakers have until august 20th if they hope to put a gambling referendum on the ballot for voters to decide this november. >> fox 5 morning news at 4:30 starts right now right now

. good morning. it is tuesday, july 17th. taking a live look at the washington monument. what a beautiful start to the day at least from what you can see. however, the temperatures don't feel so beautiful. already pretty warm out there this morning. i'm sarah simmons. welcome to fox amorning news. >> i'm wisdom martin. time to bring in tucker barnes to talk about the weather conditions outside. -- welcome to fox 5 morning news. >> it is mostly just warm and humid out there to start your day. we are not looking at any rain showers. i think even this afternoon if you have have outdoor activities planned, it will be dry but dangerously hot. we'll be close to 100. >> i heard that. that tuck? my head. >> humidity levels will have a tendency to fall this afternoon. at least we won't have to be dealing with that.

be seeing the construction crews clear out and head home. let's take a live look at trafficland. if you are traveling northbound 95 heading up past the prince william parkway, nothing in your way. lanes wide open and continuing to the mixing bowl. 395 also looking good as you leave the beltway heading up past edsall all the way to the 14th street bridge. no accidents or incidents reported there. as we said, the beltway looking good. 66, no worries for you heading out of manassas through centerville. in maryland, montgomery county, outer loop to the left of your screen. your lanes are open and 270, you have the groan light from frederick in toward the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. imetraffic. -- you have the green lit from frederick in -- light from frederick in toward the beltway. a small plane went down just before 7:30 last night at davis airport. witnesses say it appears that the two people at the airport were practicing how to land and

take off when the crash occurred. >> the aircraft on its approach at about 300 feet to 400 feet above the ground made appear abrupt backfire where the engine's exhaust emited a loud bang. it is quite possible they did not hear the backfire and you wouldn't see the engine do anything that would make you think something was wrong. >> the pilot survived the crash but was seriously hurt. the passenger who was also a pilot and a flight instructor was killed. a fire in wood brim forced some to reportedly jump from balconies and we're told one firefighter may have been hurt but no one else was seriously injured of it was at the friendship place apartment building on jim stone drive near woodside drive. the fire started around 9:00 and by the time firefighters flew over the area, firefighters had already contained the flames. we are monitoring metro's come pirate glitch this morning t shut down the entire system not once but twice over the weekend and this morning, metro still does not know why.

manager says the computer vendor is working with them around the clock to try to figure out what caused the system to crash. the problem disturbed maryland senator barbara mikulski. >> the airwaves are hopping today. they've been hopping over the weekend. e-mails are coming in, some volcanic, some even more so. >> the compute are issue trumped the announcement. new national safety regulations. they let the transportation department withhold money from metro if it does not make safety improvements. the issue of expanding gambling once again on the docket at the state house today. the governor says there is a strong possibility he will call for a special session this summer but won't do it unless he has an agreement from house leaders that they will consider expansion. national harbor has been mentioned as a possible location for a sixth casino. th

>> this has to happen. this is millions of dollars for the state of maryland. millions of dollars for prince george's county and baltimore city. >> governor o'malley is meeting with the house speaker and senate president today. the general assembly must take action before august 20th if it wants the gambling issue to get on the november ballot. >> virginia's attorney general has refused to certify the state appear new abortion clinic rules. last month, the board of health struck down a requirement that existing clinics meet the same building standard as new hospitals. attorney general ken cuccinelli says board members did not follow the law. this doesn't mean the regulations are derailed but it may influence governor mcdonnell's decision to approve them or send them back to the board. board. a bomb threat in detroit t briefly forced police to shut down a brim linking the u.s. and canada last night. >> a multiagenty agenty -- an

investigation is under way this morning. upon receiving this information of course the canadian authorities shut down the bridge on their side. at that time, there was some collaboration between the customs -- u.s. customs along with several other agencies here and a decision was made to actually shut down this side as well. >> reporter: police set up several roadblocks near the bridge where k-9 units were called in to search that area. coast guard teams were on hand patrolling the detroit river beneath that bridge. the temporary closing led to major traffic back-ups. >> an inconvenience. sit here for five hours, six hours maybe until they get things all cleared up. check on every inch of the bridge i guess or whatever. >> reporter: investigate ours are trying to track down where the 911 call was made. >> this call did come from the u.s. side and we are following up on the information that we

have so far and utilizing our intel center and other resources that we have. >> reporter: officials moved to reopen the crossing after a thorough inspection and found no signs of explosives. >> our people scanned the bridge. we see no issues. >> reporter: the threat comes just days after another bomb threat led authorities to temporarily close the detroit windsor tunnel. no device was found this that incident either. in new york, ainsley earhart, fox news. more serious allegations against george zimmerman and this was nothing to do with the trayvon martin shooting. >> details of what one woman said he did to her repeat lid when they were children. we hear that in her own words next as we check more headlines. stay with us.

new this morning, an outdoor barbecue in toronto ends in fire leaving two people dead and 19 others injured. police believe multiple gunman fired shots into the crowd of more than 200 people late last

night. they say one person of interest is in custody and they are looking for another suspect. two americans kidnapped in egypt have been released unharmed. you saw them there. the older man in the white garb and the woman in black. the boston area residents were taken off a bus friday along with their egyptian tour guide. the accused kidnapper said he wanted investigators to release his uncle. he let the americans go when he was promised authorities were working on getting his uncle out. another big story making headlines. molestation allegations against george zimmerman. he has been charged with shooting and killing trayvon martin. a woman has come forward caming he abused her when they were virginia. the state's attorney release a recorded interview with police. the woman said her family traveled with zimmerman's family and the abuse began when she was six. >> every time that we would go up there, i could just look at him and he would give me a

in this morning's health alert a big milestone in a 30- year fight against hiv and aids. in the past, there have been drugs to help patients deal with the disease. but now, for the first time, the government is approving a new drug that actually helps prevent hiv. now, the drug approved by the fda reduces the risk of hiv infection. it is called trevada. but as a doctor at the national institutes of health tells us, it is only for healthy patients and they have to take it every day. >> this is another tool for reducing the incidence of hiv globally. we have to recognize that hiv is still a very common disease. in the united states alone, 50,000 people per year acquire hiv. we know that the best tools for preventing hiv are condoms. we know that circumcision is effective. the approval of this drug gives us another tool but we have to recognize that for healthy people to take a drug every day in order to prevent a disease is a big challenge which many

people can't really achieve. this is for people who want to avoid getting hiv. it is very important before you take this prophylactic drug that you are tested to make sure you don't have hiv. by itself, this drug is not effective for treating hiv. in order to be effective, it has to be combined with at least one other drug. this is for people who hopefully use condoms, who have been circumcised if they are males, who need another preventive intervention. again, condoms are the most effective way to reduce your risk for hiv. >> a three-year todayy of this drug found that it cuts the risk of infection in healthy gay and bisexual men by 42% when accompanied by condoms an counseling. not your typical lemonade stand in one local neighborhood. >> an #-year-old's act of kindness in the aftermath of a big storm. -- an 8-year-old's act of kindness in the aftermath of a

he is only 8 years old but his asks are well beyond his years. johnny is raising money for his neighbor whose springfield home was ruined during last month's storm. right after the storm, johnny gave his neighbors some quarters from his piggy bank. he started selling lemonade. so far, haze raised nearly $400. eye nice gesture from that young man. >> good for him. help for a man with cerebral palsy. he is having an extremely difficult time and a half fating his motorized wheelchair under the house that he shares with his mother. >> a local church helping out by raising money for an

addition to his home. karen gray houston has the story. >> reporter: cerebral palsy as muscular condition that may slow grant down but he is not letting it stymie his development. >> i just look at myself as a regular person. >> reporter: but he is bumping into walls with his wheelchair, has difficulty navigating into the kitchen and bathroom. >> in order for me to access the bathroom, i have to aline my chair just right. >> reporter: it has been tough on his mom, trying to lift him into bed. >> i have to angle him on me, pivot in a way where i can get him into the bed. there have been times when i fall. several times, we've had times where we can't move. >> reporter: fast forward to their new found bethel community church. they found friend and members mike and ruthual, a daughter wren and others who share a

love of music. hanging out at a local sports bar every other weekend, the friend discovered grant and his mother could use some help. >> they don't ask people for things. they don't really share their business. it was discovered that he was sleeping sitting up in his wheelchair. >> reporter: decided it was time to step in. >> we are hoping a lot of the cost can be done with gifts in kind if contractors donate labor. >> reporter: church members who practice what they preach held this fundraiser at the salute italian restaurant on main street. they are hoping to raise enough money to break ground soon so they can transform brent's home. >> this part will be like his own apartment. it will have a roll-in shower. it will have a large bedroom that can handle his walker. >> reporter: everybody will be happy. it is nice to have good friend.
